RCMP Members Making a Difference in Saskatchewan
What’s New in Saskatchewan
From new memorials that honour fallen heroes, to recognition for stopping impaired drivers, to local initiatives like Battlefords’ night patrols – these stories show the impact of Saskatchewan’s RCMP Members.
Our Members
Members Recognized for Work to Stop Impaired Driving
The Van de Vorst family lost four loved ones to an impaired driver in 2016. Each year, MADD Canada bestows an award in their name to honour their memory and to support and recognize RCMP and municipal officers in their efforts to reduce the deaths and injuries caused by impaired drivers. This tragedy and legacy is a reminder of the critical role our Members play in keeping roads safe. At this year’s Van de Vorst Awards, 191 officers – including many RCMP Members – were recognized for removing impaired drivers, reflecting our Members’ ongoing commitment to keeping impaired drivers off the road.
Detachment Spotlight
Battlefords RCMP Members have introduced Property Crime Prevention Night Patrols in response to community feedback and concerns.
- Thefts of items in yards
- Break and enters
- Vehicle thefts
Working alongside the City of North Battleford’s Community Safety Officers and Battlefords Citizens on Patrol, this initiative highlights the power of collaboration and a shared commitment to building safer communities.
Remembering Fallen Heroes:
Did You Know?
The federal government contributes $78 million every year in RCMP funding, alleviating pressure on Saskatchewan taxpayers through federal funding. That’s money that can be invested back into healthcare, schools, and community programs. RCMP Members are highly trained here in Regina to deliver world class policing, and can proudly do it at a sustainable cost to taxpayers.
Burgers, drones and Police Service Dog (PSD) Duke – Members of the Leader, SK RCMP brought the community together in August for a special BBQ honoring retired officers Cst. Ray Hawkins, Cst. Al Lavallee, and Sgt. Ron Toogood along with their spouses, for their years of dedication to the Town of Leader.
Over 150 residents joined in, touring the detachment, enjoying a drone demonstration, and cheering as Police Dog Duke showed off his skills. The kids especially loved exploring the jail cell and leaving with fingerprint souvenirs.
A heartfelt thank you to our retired Members for their service, and to the Leader community for making this celebration one to remember!
Supporting RCMP Members in High-Risk Calls
Too often, safety comes at the price of our Members putting themselves in harm’s way to ensure public safety. In the last year, Saskatchewan RCMP Members have responded to high-risk incidents such as:
- A fatal confrontation on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation that left a Member in the hospital after responding to an assault call
- An incident near Deschambault Lake where officers were threatened with a firearm, resulting in a fatal outcome
These unpredictable and volatile situations in rural and remote communities are made even more challenging by limited resources and backup. Supporting RCMP Members means equipping them with the tools they need, while ensuring independent oversight and accountability. By investing in officer safety, we build safer communities for everyone.
